  • Dumbo Jet: Embarrassingly Expensive Retrofit

To hide the cost of renovating the plane Qatar donated to President Trump, the Air Force appears to have tucked it inside an over-budget, behind-schedule nuclear modernization program.

Mr. Trump’s plane probably won’t fly for long: It will take a year or two to get the work done, and then the Qatari gift — improved with the latest communications and in-flight protective technology — will be transferred to the yet-to-be-created Trump presidential library after he leaves office in 2029, the president has said.

The extension is the latest turnabout by Mr. Trump, whose trade policies have injected substantial uncertainty into the global economy. While announcing his recommendation for 50 percent E.U. tariffs on Friday, the president had assailed Europe’s negotiating tactics and expressed no interest in reaching a deal.

In an astonishing ambush, President Trump dimmed the lights in the Oval Office on Wednesday during a meeting with President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and showed what he said was video evidence of racial persecution of white South Africans.

[A] journalist asked what it would take for Mr. Trump to change his mind that there was no “white genocide” in South Africa.

Mr. Ramaphosa said that “it will take President Trump listening to the voices of South Africans.”

Mr. Trump largely dismissed Mr. Ramaphosa’s attempt to describe the situation in his own country…

The South African delegation continued to try to explain to Trump the situation on the ground in South Africa, but he remained unmoved. “Dead white people, dead white farmers,” he said.

“We have a multiparty democracy in South Africa that allows people to express themselves,” Mr. Ramaphosa told Mr. Trump. “Our government policy is completely against what he was saying.”

  • More Deportation Chaos: Executive Branch’s Criminal Contempt

A federal court ordered the Trump administration on Tuesday to maintain custody of migrants on a deportation flight that immigrants’ lawyers said was headed to South Sudan, a transfer the judge said appeared to violate an injunction he issued in April.

Judge Murphy: “Where is the plane?”

Justice Dept. Lawyer: “I’m told that that information is classified, and I am told that the final destination is also classified…”

Judge Murphy asked what authority the government was using to classify the location of the deportation flight.

Justice Dept. Lawyer: “I don’t have the answer to that…”

It was not immediately clear what punishment, if any, Judge Murphy intended to mete out against the administration or those who took part in the operation, but he asked for a list of names so he can notify them that they might all face criminal contempt penalties.

The standoff in Judge Murphy’s Boston courtroom is one of several deportation proceedings in which the administration has faced accusations of both denying immigrants due process and of flouting court orders.

“As is becoming far too common,” appeals court judge Roger Gregory wrote, “we are confronted again with the efforts of the executive branch to set aside the rule of law in pursuit of its goals.”

  • Harvard harassed again: False Claims Act???

From New York Times: In a letter on Monday, the Justice Department notified Harvard about an investigation into whether its admissions process had been used to defraud the government. The inquiry was opened under the False Claims Act, a law designed to punish those who swindle the government… Targeting a university under the False Claims Act is highly unusual, reflecting the administration’s increasingly aggressive tactics…

The 14-page letter about the False Claims Act investigation this week from the Justice Department, signed by Jamie Ann Yavelberg, the director of the agency’s commercial litigation branch, did not detail exactly how Harvard may have defrauded the government.
